BACKGROUND: Dental pulp stem cells (DPSCs) are mesenchymal stem cells found within the dental pulp. In addition to their regenerative potential, DPSCs possess strong anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory properties. The aim of this review was to evaluate the anti-inflammatory effects of DPSCs and their potential use in treating inflammatory and autoimmune diseases.
METHODS: The authors reviewed published studies investigating the anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory effects of DPSCs in laboratory and animal models. The review examined the effects of DPSCs, DPSC-derived exosomes, and conditioned media in neurological, intestinal, pulmonary, renal, skin, oral, and autoimmune inflammatory diseases.
RESULTS: Studies showed that DPSCs reduced inflammation by regulating immune cells and inflammatory signaling pathways. DPSCs decreased levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines while increasing anti-inflammatory cytokines. They promoted tissue repair and improved outcomes in models of spinal cord injury, traumatic brain injury, inflammatory bowel disease, lung injury, lupus nephritis, psoriasis, periodontitis, and other inflammatory conditions. DPSC-derived exosomes and conditioned media also demonstrated significant anti-inflammatory effects.
CONCLUSIONS: This review showed that DPSCs possess powerful anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory properties that may make them useful for treating a wide range of inflammatory and autoimmune diseases. These findings support the continued investigation of DPSCs as a potential therapeutic approach.
