BACKGROUND: Successful spinal cord repair requires both neural regeneration and restoration of blood supply.
METHODS: The authors developed prevascularized scaffolds containing human dental pulp stem cells and evaluated them in a rat model of complete spinal cord injury.
RESULTS: The scaffolds promoted vascularization, axonal regeneration, myelin formation, and functional recovery.
CONCLUSIONS: This study showed that combining dental pulp stem cells with biomaterial scaffolds may enhance spinal cord repair.
