BACKGROUND: Current treatments for pulp and periapical diseases can resolve symptoms but do not fully regenerate natural pulp tissue. Dental pulp stem cells may help restore the dentin-pulp complex.
METHODS: The authors reviewed biological studies, preclinical models, clinical translation, biomaterials, growth factors, and stem cell-based strategies for functional pulp regeneration.
RESULTS: Studies showed that dental pulp stem cells, combined with biomaterials and growth factors, can support vascularization, innervation, dentin formation, and pulp-like tissue regeneration.
CONCLUSIONS: This review showed that dental pulp stem cells are central to functional pulp regeneration. Future studies may help bring tissue engineering-based endodontic therapies closer to clinical use.
