BACKGROUND: Bone defects can be difficult to repair, particularly in oral and maxillofacial applications. Dental pulp stem cells have been investigated as a potential source of regenerative cells for bone reconstruction.

METHODS: The authors systematically searched PubMed, EMBASE, and Scopus databases for preclinical studies evaluating dental pulp stem cells in bone defect regeneration.

RESULTS: Twenty-three studies met the inclusion criteria. Meta-analysis showed that dental pulp stem cells significantly improved new bone formation and enhanced bone defect healing compared with controls.

CONCLUSIONS: This study showed that dental pulp stem cells can support bone defect regeneration. Future studies may help advance their use in bone tissue engineering and regenerative medicine.
