BACKGROUND: Retinal degeneration is a major cause of irreversible vision loss and blindness worldwide. Current treatments are limited in their ability to restore damaged retinal tissue.
METHODS: The authors reviewed published studies investigating the use of dental pulp stem cells for retinal degeneration.
RESULTS: Studies showed that dental pulp stem cells secrete neurotrophic factors that support retinal cell survival and tissue repair, reduce inflammation, and promote neuroprotection.
CONCLUSIONS: This review showed that dental pulp stem cells possess significant potential for treating retinal degenerative diseases.
