BACKGROUND:Current treatments for erectile dysfunction (ED) primarily improve symptoms without repairing the underlying vascular damage. Dental pulp stem cells (DPSCs) secrete growth factors and regenerative molecules that may promote tissue repair through paracrine signaling without requiring direct stem cell transplantation.
METHODS:This open-label pilot study enrolled 38 men with erectile dysfunction between April 2016 and October 2020. Participants received intracavernosal injections of conditioned medium derived from cultured dental pulp stem cells. Erectile function was assessed using the International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF-5) questionnaire before treatment and during follow-up, while adverse events were monitored to evaluate safety.
RESULTS:Treatment with DPSC-conditioned medium significantly improved erectile function scores in many participants. The therapy was well tolerated, with no serious treatment-related adverse events reported during the study. The findings suggest that the regenerative factors secreted by DPSCs may help restore vascular endothelial function and improve erectile performance.
CONCLUSIONS:This pilot study demonstrated that conditioned medium derived from stem cells from human exfoliated deciduous teeth may represent a safe and promising regenerative therapy for erectile dysfunction. Larger controlled clinical trials are warranted to further evaluate its long-term efficacy and therapeutic potential.
